Foundation in the Midwest

Midwest, U.S. | Studio James Carpenter/JCDA with Studio Unseen Light

This project was envisioned as a beacon with subtle layers of light. Downlight grazers are positioned at the top back of exterior perforated panels, allowing the façade to glow as a translucent envelope providing required interior privacy and a striking presence from the street.

Inside, skylights are illuminated with asymmetric daylit dimmed uplights discretely washing the volumes when daylight is absent. Small cylinder downlights are aligned with the screen below, providing a layered lighting effect maintaining a sense of refinement. In private offices, a combination of minimal downlights and wall-mounted uplights with asymmetric optics creates a soft yet focused workspace, balancing functionality and flexibility with comfort.

This office project was designed to comply with ASHRAE 90.1-2013, achieving energy performance 20% below code for interior spaces and 6% below code for the exterior façade. We carefully mocked up and specified the most efficient products available at the time, ensuring that neither aesthetics nor performance were compromised. Accessories were added where necessary to create a comfortable environment while maintaining the intended performance of each fixture.
