Chapel of St. Ignatius and Gayle and Tom Benson Jesuit Center at Loyola University
New Orleans, LA | Trahan Architects
The chapel serves as both a spiritual and social heart of the historic quad, offering a place for reflection, worship, and meaningful campus gatherings. Its interior draws inspiration from the traditional axial organization of Gothic cathedrals, while thoughtfully integrating interfaith programs, embodying its commitment to inclusion and diversity. The curved forms are intentionally designed to foster a sense of warmth, connection, and shared presence, creating an atmosphere of “communal intimacy” that supports both individual contemplation and collective experience.
This not-for-profit chapel design began during COVID and went through many value engineering efforts, but the lighting concept did not change. The solid cylindrical form is visible at night through the ambient light from the existing buildings, and tree uplighting. Luminous interior elements, uplit ceilings, and washed walls create an inviting interior glow through the apertures, highlighting the architecture through light and shadows. The project required careful fixture selection and purposeful, meaningful approaches.
